Monster Wrangler

A reporter from ANN (the Arensa News Network) is on-site to interview some Wranglers and their monsters in the opening days of The Oceanside Rumble. While she's looking to talk to competitors before the tournament begins, she's also interviewing spectators to get their impressions on the tournaments and the Wranglers that will be battling once the tournament begins.

Come get interviewed and see if you can attract some attention from your soon-to-be adoring fans!


Participants: Any number of Wranglers (and their monsters)

Rules: Characters participating in this thread make each of the indicated Skill Rolls listed below.

• "Tell Us About Yourself!": Each character makes two Difficulty 1 Skill Rolls, each one using a different Skill of their choice, to tell the report a bit about themselves and their interests. For these Skill Rolls, use Energy as the matching Attribute instead of the Skill's normal Attribute; these count as Social Skill Rolls.
  
  For each roll, on a success, a character gains 2 Interview Points, plus 1 Interview Point per spent Raise. On a failure, the character stammers or otherwise embarrasses themselves on camera but may continue to participate in the event.
  
  Remember to make two Skill Rolls total!
  
  
  "Tell Us About Your Companion!": Each character makes a Difficulty X Monster Lore (Mind) Skill Roll, where X is equal to the Rarity of their monster. This counts as a Social Skill Roll.
  
  On a success, the character is able to rattle off some interesting facts about their monster; they gain 2 Interview Points, plus 1 Interview Point per spent Raise. On a failure, the character isn't able to provide any interesting information on their monster, but they may continue to participate in the event.
  
  
  "How About a Trick?": Finally, each character makes a Difficulty X Wrangle (Energy) Skill Roll, where X is equal to the Willpower of their monster.
  
  On a success, their monster does a fun trick and the character earns 2 Interview Points, plus 1 Interview Point per spent Raise. On a failure, their monster doesn't do the trick, which is a bit awkward, though the character may continue to participate in the event.
  
  
  Destined for Chosu's Funniest Monster Videos?: Finally, the character makes a Mischief Check for their monster. This is a Difficulty 1 Wrangle (Energy) Skill Roll. On a success, everything is fine and the interview comes to a normal conclusion.
  
  On a failure, the character's monster gets all worked up from the interview and does something... very unfortunate. This might range from charging a random group of passers-by to eating the reporter's microphone to vomiting on the reporter's shoes. Your choice! The character loses 2 Interview Points.

Conclusion: At the end of the event, the character(s) with the most Interview Points have a great interview that is run on multiple news segments across Arensa. The character gains a sponsorship deal with NamTech for the duration of the tournament, which gives them 100 onz and a Skill Kit of their choice (even if they're not a Competitor).

The character(s) with the second- and third-most Interview Points also have good interviews and gain sponsorship deals with Vasoworth Solutions for the duration of the tournament, giving them 30 onz and 2 medicine sprays of their choice (even if they're not a Competitor).

"Err... hello.. My name is Mara Frost. I'm from right here, in Arensa. I'm a breeder who is here to watch the competition. There's all kinds of awesome things to learn about monster breeding habits."

"Did you know herghs are actually quite romantic to their partners? It's true! Though most people think they are gross, male herghs are super sweet and gift prospective mates shiny objects and compete to make the best nest. Staguars will hunt and provide their mates with kills or leaves, sticks.... anything they think of as a cool toy."

"Oh, um, yeah, I also like to cook! Uh,... err.... food... A-a-rensan food, mostly." Smooth, Mara, real smooth.

"As you see here, my best friend, Blitz is a staguar with a bit different fur color from the norm. This is pseudo-melanistic, but melanistic and albino are also pretty common variants." (Monster Lore fail) A lot of people know that, staguars are pretty common and people love the black and white ones.

'Just look, Blitz is really well trained! She's so smart!!!' With a small series of hand signals and her owner doting on her Blitz, crouched low. A low dart forward like she was out hunting and then a flip! Blitz finished the trick by rearing up on her hind paws and giving Mara a 'high paw' as high as she could with a big feline grin. She held that standing position as long as possible before Mara gave a pat on her head.

Mara nodded and bowed awkwardly at the camera and sped off, Blitz at her side.

"And next we have..." The interviewer started as she steps on front of the small girl with the large fiery dragon. There was a growl - from the girl, and her eyes fixed themselves on the reporter who took a brief moment before speaking again.

"Um...your name is?"

"Fiadh."

"Right. Ok. Why don't you tell the people at home about yourself?" The reporter motioned to the camera. Fiadh looked at it with a scowl on her face.

"I live in great sand land, hunt many things. Build forts and track. Hunting. Eating."

She stared back at the woman again.

"Hunt with arrows. Hunt with net, with anything. So does Riki, but Riki no like same food."

"I see, and Riki you say? What a unique creature! What is he?"

Fiadh shrugged.

"He my brother."

"I see...and does he do tricks?"

"No" Fiadh was scowling again. It was an uncomfortable stare as she fell into silence.

"Um...ok! Well thank you for your time! I'll let you go now."

"Kay." Fiadh left. The flaming dragon growled at the reporter woman but thankfully left after his master.

Oh no.

Calico had once been modestly famous, in a local way. The cameras had loved her, and she'd loved them back.

But quite a lot had changed, and she tugged at her threadbare jacket a bit self-consciously.

Relax, relax, you're a long way from home, maybe they haven't heard about you around here...

Orlok, clinging to her back, rustled his wings, apparently having picked up on her agitation.

Here goes...

She put on her best "go to hell" smile as the interview began. It was armor, because she could tell right away, the interviewer had heard of her. And as usual, for the wrong reasons.

"So. Calico. Why don't you tell the people back home a little bit about yourself."

"Well, I'm... here to compete. Like a lot of other people, I'd say. Wasn't actually my first choice of career, but, well... things happen." And I refuse to run away from mentioning that fact. "You wouldn't know it to look at me, but I got my start on the stage- just a bit of acrobatics at first, but I eventually transitioned into dance. And even these days, being a bit coordinated physically can pay off." She adopted a stage whisper. "It lets me keep up with critters like Orlok..."

As if on cue, that worthy crawled up to look over her shoulder at the camera, then snapped his wings open. He didn't trust the weird human with the weird thing pointed at his caregiver.

"Oh, and I presume this would be Orlok! What can you tell us about him?"

"Well, as you can see, he's a Saturnadus. I caught him in a forest in Amoria, Little jerk darned near gave me frostbite the first time I saw him, but he eventually calmed down and figured out I knew where the goodies are. In the wild, these guys are ambush predators, and those wings are a big part of their strategy. I figured I was prepared- I was ready for the wing-dazzle. I wasn't ready for the cold." She patted the bug on top of its head with one index finger. "Little jerk."

"Could you maybe demonstrate?" Despite her baseline impression of Calico being somewhat negative, she was warming up a bit.

So far, so good...

"I dunno, he can be kinda... well. Again. A jerk. And he has no sense of presentation whatsoever. Orlok? Wanna show off your wings?"

He plainly did- he snapped them wide, momentarily dazzling the interviewer, then flew an elaborate figure-eight around her, showing off the full range of his color and his maneuverability before landing right atop Calico's head, his wings wide, his head up. Almost as if he were striking a pose.

"Orlok, you dork! Showoff..." Calico shook her head and grinned. He... chittered in reply. But then he quietly furled his wings, and crawled around to her back. "I know vermin get a bad rap, but it's all in how you handle 'em. Well. Some of them."

"I see, well.... good luck!"

"Thanks!" Assuming you mean it.

“Are… are you talking to ME?” Carl Heinrich stammered, looking taken aback as the interviewer thrust the microphone at him. There was an uncomfortable silence as the camera lingered on the blond boy, who was taking a few deep breaths to regain his composure. The interviewer was about to go to the next subject when Carl Heinrich finally spoke again.

“I’m a student of history of the MAJUUL EMPIRE,” Carl Heinrich began, enunciating clearly and loudly. “As you may know, the CONSTRUCTS of the EMPIRE were turned back by Amoria’s domestication of so-called MONSTERS. The common JINGLOTS on the field were NO MATCH for the CARNOIDS, the VESPARKS, and other MONSTERS that had not previously been encountered by the EMPIRE. History shows that it’s INNOVATION and NEW TACTICS that wins wars, you see… and those DISRUPTIVE FORCES were on the side of the MONSTER WRANGLERS this time.”

“But there was innovation in the engineering labs of the MAJUUL EMPIRE as well,” the boy engineer continued enthusiastically. “Advanced Constructs such as KILLBOX REX here were still being developed. My THESIS is that mass deployment of these KILLBOTS would have increased the effectiveness of the Imperial forces OVER 500 PERCENT.” There was a burst of feedback from the microphone as the excited boy shouted into it.

“Killbot Rex, eh?” the interviewer said, looking impressed. “Can you tell us more about it?”

“Well, he’s an advanced Construct of Majuul design,” Carl Heinrich repeated. “Don’t you SEE how advanced he is?”
Noticing that he had become the center of attention, the war machine known as Rex began to wag its tail.

“Advanced how?” the interviewer persisted. “What makes him better than those Jinglots you mentioned before?”

“Can’t you SEE?” the boy said, gesturing wildly at the Warwolf. “LOOK AT THE FANGS!!”

At this, Rex opened its mouth and began to pant like an excited dog.

“Riiiight,” the interviewer said, sounding doubtful. “Moving on. Does Killbot Rex do tricks?”

“Killbot Rex is programmed with over NINETY battle tactics,” Carl Heinrich muttered, sounding aggrieved. “I SUPPOSE you could call them TRICKS.”

The boy signaled to Killbot Rex, and the Warwolf obediently sat back on its haunches, closing its mechanical jaws and assuming an attentive posture. Stepping forward, Carl Heinrich balanced a small, cylinder-shaped device on the Construct’s nose. Killbot Rex allowed this, remaining completely still.

“It’s a single-use short term chemically fueled power boost of my own design,” Carl Heinrich confided to the interviewer.

“So, it’s a Monster snack?” the interviewer asked.

Carl Heinrich frowned. “A single-use short term chemically fueled power boost!” he repeated obstinately, before turning back to Killbot Rex and giving it another signal.

Rex flipped the Monster snack - that is, the power boost - up into the air. Then with a powerful leap, the Warwolf snatched the Monster snack (power boost) in mid air and gobbled it up. There was a tense moment as the falling Construct nearly ran into the camera crew, but Rex recovered its balance without knocking anything over.

“Carl Heinrich Mauser and his monster, Killbot Rex, everyone!” the interviewer declared. Rex woofed happily, and Carl Heinrich took an awkward bow.

Ashley knew this interview was coming. She was pretty used to them by now. Though she was a little nervous. This was about being a wrangler which she really wasn't. Her parents never allowed to have any sort of pet until the record company wanted her sing about monster wrangling. She has learned what she could, but she didn't know how much else she was missing out on.

Interviewer: "Oh. Miss. May I speak to you for a moment. I am Bob Ignor from Areasna News Network. Hm. Are you that new singer, Ashley Elle?"

Ashley: "I am Ashley Elle. I am very excited to be here. And this of course is Mr. Wiggles, my best friend." Mr. Wiggles glows various shades of blue.

Bob: "How exciting. Could you let the audience get to know you a little better?"

Ashley: "Well, as you know, I will be on tour soon. I look forward to it. I love to sing and dance. Being on stage, in front of the crowds is such a thrill. I only hope Mr. Wiggles can enjoy it as much during this competition. Hopefully, we will both put on a show that will bring joy and happiness to everyone in the crowd."

Bob: "That sounds wonderful. I do wonder if you could tell us a little about Mr. Wiggles. I don't know if I ever seen one like that before."

Ashley: "Well... he's a Kleeth and from Rosalia. He glows." Ashley may not know much about monsters, but she says it confidently.

Bob: "Umm.. I see. Well, can you show us a trick?"

Ashley: "Of course. Actually, this is a little preview of something we plan on doing during our tour."

Ashley does a part of a dance routine where Mr. Wiggles dances with her, moving in-between her legs in precise coordination.

Bob: "That was wonderful. I am now looking forward to taking my daughters to your show and seeing the whole routine."

Ashley: "I can't wait."

Ashley notices Mr. Wiggles eyeing a child eating cotton candy and beginning to change his colors to mesmerize the lad, so Ashley pets and promises to get him some cotton candy after the interview.

Bob: "Well, this is Bob Ignor with ANN and rising star, Ashley Elle. This tournament is shaping up to be an interesting one. Stay tuned for more interviews."

The machinelike creature hums beside him, a chime sounding from within its depths.

"I guess you're right. If we want work, this is the chance to get the word out."

Antony clears his throat: "So where are we supposed to begin?"

I: "Well, why don't you tell me about yourself?"

A: "Well, I'm as comfortable with a wrench in my hand as I am in the battle box. *leans in* Look, I don't care if you're one of my competitors, you get the Antony Acierno guarantee: I don't care what it is, it'll be less broke when I'm done with it."

There is an energy to Antony's voice, and there is legitimate passion and honesty that it's kind of endearing.

I: "Umm sure, we usually don't do plugs but *cough* what about your companion?"

A: "Well...look, I know a lot about a lot, and I've been up in his guts more than anyone will find normal.

Rocky: *cha-chime*

A: "Yeah that came out wrong. But the thing is, whatever Rocky is, it's nothing like any other machine monster types I've seen. His internal systems don't really have analogs with anything else I've seen manufacutured. I have no idea where he came from, just that he's a bud."

I: "Ok, an air of mystery then. Does he do tricks?"

A: "Err, tricks?

R: *bloooooop*

A: "Yes, I know you're not a pet. But we are trying to make a show here."

R: *Blleeeeee*

A: "OK, a trick? What is it?"

Rocky leans in, opening an orifice and chomping down on the metal of the announers microphone.

A: "No! Bad unknown tech! I will get you tasty rocks!"

The interview went downhill from there.

This was neat: a reporter was interviewing attendees. It looked like spectators and would be competitors. Milo moved in to listen and watch. It was fun to hear from some other wranglers and to see their monsters. There were quite a few he didn't know anything about.

In time the interviewer looked his way after noticing the warwolf sitting upright beside him. The one staring intently at things. Yes, that monster who wanted some attention.

Interviewer: "Another warwolf? Oh great, let's talk to him next. Excuse me!"

And so the interview started.

"Oh, um, hi! I'm Milo Whitewood. Nice to meet you! I'm really excited to be here in Crayton with my monster. This is Diva."

The warwolf rose up politely onto its hind legs for a moment. It seemed to enjoy the camera being pointed at it.

"Um, let's see! I'm from Amoria and I'm a wrangler. I like meeting and learning about monsters. Getting them to help people or not cause trouble. I really like training monsters and getting them to understand commands. My parents used to run a monster ranch." He says proudly. The questions continued.

"Let's see. Um, I like people watching and solving mysteries! It's really important to be able to study and understand monsters before you can try taming them. When you can spot tracks and find hidden monsters or where a Panchin has hidden something it's a big help!"

Then he was being asked more directly about Diva.

"Diva is my best friend! She's a Warwolf so she's construct, but she's real to me. She loves attention like this." It seemed it too. The robotic white wolf was being very, very well behaved. That lead to being asked about a trick.

"Oh sure! Let's see..." He squats down to take off his backpack. From inside he takes out a ball. With a squeeze it starts flashing. "Diva chews through these really quickly, but I taught this."

Milo turns to the moderately large metallic monster. "Diva, sit." He held up the ball and she quickly did as she was asked. "Diva, stay." The ball is placed on the roof of her snout. It balances there as the Warwolf stays perfectly still. "Now Diva, ball!" The wolf launches the ball up suddenly into the air. It continues to flash, emitting light, right up until Diva jumps after it and grabs it in her jaws. In moments it is shredded.

The warwolf then parades about the interviewer with the remnants still hanging from its mouth. It sits down beside her and lifts its head for pats.

"Good girl Diva." Milo turned to grin happily at the interviewer. "Isn't she cute?"

Ari hadn't really considered what she'd say in an interview. Her parents were the ones who spoke to journalists. She'd never even met a reporter.

"Hello, my name is Ari." There was a brief pause as she considered what others would most want to know about her. What would be considered important? "Arianllyn Angharad. The name may be familiar to some. I have been traveling for a while, learning about different regions and the monsters that thrive in them."

She went into more detail, offering examples.

"But, this is my favorite little monster, Llyan."

A briarola peeked out from behind Ari's leg.

"Isn't she adorable. So shy." She leaned forward and whispered, "She's a deluzo, but keeps her true appearance hidden."

Llyan looked up at Ari with a sad eyes.

"No. Llyan I'm sorry. I didn't wanr to betray you. But, we can't keep it a secret in the tournament."

"She's amazing, really. Fast and agile, and her illusions are incredible."

Once Llyan seemed cheerful again, Ari smiled. "Let's show them what you can do."

Llyan scampered about. An illusionary obstacle course formed, as she leapt through hoops and flipped over barricades.

Peering out from behind matted brown hair a twig of a boy begins his interview, a young Mycetar laying at his side.

"Hello my name is Dion Moore and I am from a small village in Kers. My goal is to become the very best monster duelist to have live and bring glory to my family and nation in the name of the Bancrofts." He says in a clearly rehearsed manner.

"Together with my companion Morty we will win this tournament, believe it. I don't think most people will have ever fought a Mycetar before and Morty and I have a lot to show them, I first wrangled him when I was seven and we have been best friends ever since; even if others misunderstand him and his species. Everyone thinks he must be vicious because of his scythes but Morty only eats plants, he loves palm leaves" Dion says giving him a little pat on the head.

"Morty also loves to dig little holes and sit in them play little games with me." The boy stands up, drawing the attention of his monster. "Morty, Blossom!" Morty quickly rises and lowers his head, tucking his scythes in close to his body and begins spinning in place. The armored plates on his back protrude out and as he spins a thin green mist begins to envelope him. "Stop Morty, good job." The boy says pulling a bit of palm frond from a pocket and giving it to creature.

"We look forward to meeting the other competitors and wish everyone the best of luck. Thank you."

Citaly was surprised when she was stopped by the local news crew (as opposed to the Sargarosan news that she was working with). She leaned forward, murmuring, "Are you sure? I'm going to be fight commentating for another news channel."

The interviewer shook her head. "Look, you're at least semi well known here. It'll be good for everyone."

A brief call to make sure that she wouldn't get in trouble on any noncompete agreements later, the interviewer counted down and the camera began rolling.... just as Citaly's Hergh flew up to her joy and the interviewers consternation. The camera man pulled his collar up over his nose and mouth.

"We're here at the Oceanside Rumble, and what a pleasant surprise we've had to find Citaly Velasco here among the spectators. Please, for those who don't already know, tell us about yourself!" The interviewer's expression couldn't quite help being slightly pained.

Citaly gave her best winning smile to the camera. "Hi, I'm Citaly Velasco. I play Miranda Enriquez on 'The Flavor of Love in Sargaros." It was brief and to the point, but she really lit up as she began talking about wrangling. "I'm here because I used to be a Wrangler myself before Soleil Studious hired me on. I loved doing it, and I really miss having so much opportunity to raise so many monsters. All of them really have something to love about them. I'm very excited to see what the new generation is going to do in this tournament."

"So tell us about... uh... that!" The interviewer eyed the unpleasant bird as it seemed to stare off in two different directions at once.

Citaly grinned, either oblivious or inured to the reaction. "This is Mr. Pukeybirb! He's a Hergh, and is the son of my original Hergh, Horf. People are often put off by Herghs because they look and smell a little gross, but they're actually some of the sweetest and most loving companions you could imagine. A Hergh is a friend for life, that's what I like to say."

"Does uh... Mr. Pukeybirb do any tricks?"

"Does he do any tricks," Citaly echoes with a laugh. "Of course!" She glanced briefly around for a target before pointing to a trash can about 20 feet off. "Okay, Mr. Pukeybirb! No net!"

The bird seemed to twitch, look even more uncomfortable than usual, then convulse a couple of times before launching a ball of green, phlegmy projectile vomit that they could smell as it flew in a graceful arc through the air to land directly in the center of the trash can without touching the sides. Citaly clapped. "Great job!" And fed the thing a treat.

The interviewer stared, looking a little nauseated, but also a bit impressed. "Well, that was... certainly exciting. Back to you at the news desk."

Felix had been walking about with Sumaru on his shoulder when he saw the reporter and held back a sigh. He liked talking to people but reporters and interviews always made him feel awkward.

"Hello there! You look like a fit competitor tell us a little about yourself."

"Oh well I'm Felix! Just sort of just into fitness these days and trying out wrangling for the first time. Suramu here is a great workout buddy always love going for run and such." He replied with a smile "we also wrestle sometimes!" He said with a little laugh.

She raised an eyebrow "Wrestle? He's a third your height, can't be a very good partner for that." She seemed a little confused.

"Oh uhh well I mean its mostly like uh play fighting! And you know these little guys are a lot stronger than they look. I think." He was already thrown off "I mean guess that depends on what you think." His smile had dimmed from bright to uncertain as a large hand rubs the back of his neck.

"Can you tell us a little about your partner?" The interviewer asked bringing things back on track.

"Oh uh well, he's a Temprill. Though you probably already guessed that hehe." The small chuckle a little self conscious "um they live in mountains. That's where I met Suramu. Uh they are strong. Shi- shoot" He corrected his language at a reproachful look from the reporter "I already said that."

"And what about you? A bit older than your fellow competitors, what drew you to wrangling?"

"Oh I just had a different career path for a whe and then you know..life happened so now I'm trying something well uh new." He hadn't recovered his usual sense of confidence.

The reporter might have been tired from a long day of reporting but she tried to throw Felix a life line "Well can your partner do any tricks?"

Felix lit up "Oh! Yeah totally." He looked to Suramu "Suramu do the...the thing!" Suramu stared back blankly before yawning and laying down.

The reporter held her professional smile but her eyes held a bit of pity in them "Well there you have it, keep your eyes on Felix to see how he adjusts to this new world of Monster battles!"

Felix gave an awkward wave and then walked swiftly away. At least Suramu had behaved through the whole ordeal.

Sam walked about the arena area when she was blindsided by the interviewer.

Interviewer: "Hello there young miss! Who are you? and what are you known for?"

Sam:"Huh? I am Sam... I... I... I... make medicine?" She blinked and got her bearings. "I know a lot bout stuff about what is good to eat if lost in a forest... what herb is good eat'g... I could track a monster but...eh" Shrugs.

Interviewer: "And who is your green friend there?"

Sam: "Oh... this is Ginger... She is a Gympix I found sleeping on a leaf. She like to sleep and take sun baths. I would be careful of her thorns they are poisonous." Sam smiled. "She is really smol but er light weigh allows er to float and dance in the wind."

Interviewer: "How about a trick?"

Ginger: "chirp"

Sam: "C'on Ginger... show them how ya dance."

Ginger: "CHIRP" The Gympix floated from Sam's head to the microphone and laid on it.

Sam shrugged.

Interviewer: "Um... Is she going to do something?"

Ginger: "CHirP CHIRP!" The little gympix was annoyed and shot her thorns at the interviewer.

Sam chuckled. "I told ya she was lazy. Ya interrupting her beauty sleep."

As the reporter steps up to Desmond, a single very enthusiastic woman from the spectators nearby screams out "WOO, GO DESSIE!"
Desmond very deliberately doesn't look in that direction and seems to shrink a little from the embarassment. Aren't parents great?

"Ah... Hi. I'm Desmond Brown, from Rolsdale. I guess some of you might have seen me around a bit in the area. You could say that I'm a bit of a monster expert. I've been studying really hard about them since I was little. I'm pretty sure that I know more about them than any other Rolsdale kid. I love how the morphologies differ slightly between regions, and our area certainly has some interesting ones, with the bias towards more generalist lifestyles and lighter colourations due to the climate and wide vange of vegetation."

"I've got photos of a lot of them. I'm also an avid photographer" he says, becoming more passionate. He swings his rucksack around and starts pulling a large photo binder out of it. "Film of course, the quality is way better. See?" He shoves the open binder towards the camera. Nothing can really be seen by anyone, but at least it conveys his passion.

He realises that he's being a little too passionate perhaps, and becomes self-conscious. Shoving his binder hastily back into his bag and fidgeting a little, he continues, gesturing to the zephid next to him. "This is Lucy. She's a zephid. They're, ah... very cool. Yeah."

Oh no, his mind is going blank and he can't think of what to say, which only makes him more nervous. "She can... uh.... yeah. Blow air and stuff. Yeah." He looks at Lucy, hoping she will spontaneously do something cool. Nope. She just shifts weight slightly, the large blue bow wiggling a little.

"So.... yeah... thanks." And with that he turns and walks away quickly. Lucy follows obediently behind, trying to work out what's happening.
