If You Give a Monster a Cookie (D5 LA)

Post by Carl Heinrich Mauser » Mon Apr 17, 2023 10:31 am

The next day, Carl Heinrich returned to the beach and gathered a few of the most slimy-looking rocks that he could find, before approaching the burrow of the mysterious slime-fish that he and Ari had managed to feed earlier.

Ari was gathering rocks. Llyan and Loll were with her, along with a third companion, a small chasma that fluttered about.

"Good afternoon." Ari waved.

The small creature peaked out of its burrow, only to immediately dart back inside out of fear.

"I think it needs a friend." she said. "Someone it can trust to keep it safe."

Carl Heinrich placed a couple of tantalizing (?) slimy rocks near the opening of the burrow, then stepped back to rejoin Ari.

"I think you're right," he said. "If I recall correctly, neither fish nor frogs have maternal behavior, so I doubt it has any other of its kind to look after it. Yet, it seems too small and vulnerable to survive on its own."

"I ... haven't done this with a living Monster before," Carl Heinrich admitted. "I've only worked with Constructs. I mean, I know how it works in THEORY...."

"But yes, some help would be appreciated," he said sheepishly. "How should we start?"

"Just like yesterday." she answered. "We wait for it to come to us to feed, and we encourage it to trust us."

She laid down and waited for the creature to approach, motioning for Carl to follow her lead.

“Okay, let me just arrange the rocks where it can reach them,” Carl Heinrich said. The boy wrangler quickly arranged the rocks he had gathered around the creature’s burrow. Unfortunately, one of the slime-covered rocks slipped from his hands and fell to the ground with a clatter, nearly blocking the burrow entrance!

Hastily, Carl Heinrich snatched the fallen rock away from the burrow entrance and backed away, hoping the noise had not frightened away the skittish animal.

“Well, that could have gone better,” he admitted ruefully.

The small creature eventually comes out of its burrow and pulls itself over to the slime rocks. It gives them a few tentative licks, then glances over at Carl and Ari. After a long moment - and thanks entirely to Ari's chill vibes - the creature slowly pulls itself across the sand and over to Carl, where it places a tiny, poisonous fin on his shoe.

Carl Heinrich's eyes went wide with wonder as the shy creature came to him and seemed to make friends with him - or, perhaps, with his shoe. But he could work with that!

The boy wrangler fetched the box that the slime fish had been using and arranged some slime rocks inside it to make a sort-of carrier for the creature.

"Thanks SO MUCH for your help," he gushed at Ari. "I never could have done this without you."
